Surgical Options For Hair Loss

For some, waiting for the progress of normal hair growth using medicinal treatment can seem excrutiatingly slow and you might be considering surgical options to immediately increase the hair on your head.

Hair transplant surgery involves moving hair and follicles from an area of thick hair growth to a balding area.  The follicles and hair are removed from one part of the head with either a tubelike instrument called a punch graft or with a scalpel.  The hair strands are then transplanted into tiny holes or slits in bald areas of the scalp.

Generally, one surgical period is not enough and you may be scheduled for several surgeries depending on the area that needs coverage.

Often, hair may fall out after it is transplanted, but new hair will regrow in the transplanted hair follicle. However, it may take a period of time before you can see the new hair growth.

The success and amount of hair coverage on a treated area depends on how many hair follicles remain healthy after being transplanted. You will probably need several surgeries to get the hair coverage you want. Healing between surgeries usually takes several months.

The Risks Involved In Surgery

Hair Loss Surgery involves grafting hair and follicles onto the scalp.  Thus, this surgery has an almost similar risk factor as any other surgical graft procedure.

Risks of hair transplantation surgery include:
1)  Death of the hair follicles after being transplanted, in which case no new hair will grow.
2)  An unnatural look with a patchy hair pattern.
3)  Infection.
4)  Scarring.
5)  Excessive bleeding.

So is it truly worth while to opt for surgery?  Though it is a permenant solution to hair loss, you need to also consider that it is the most expensive option to choose, may take several surgeries to achieve the desired look and may take up to 2 years to achieve this look.  Ultimately, the decision should be made by you
